New York en avril 2007. La bulle immobilière n’avait pas encore éclaté. C’est en arpentant les rues que j’ai remarqué cette violente harmonie de couleurs sur la porte d’entrée. Aucune autre signalisation ou enseigne à l’extérieur. Pas de nom non plus. C’est à proximité de Union Square dans la 15ème rue. J’essaie de le retrouver avec Internet. Rien à faire. Je me demande si cet hôtel existe toujours. En janvier, j’ai préparé mon voyage à New York avec Internet. L’information est mise à jour en temps réel, et donc fiable. Sur un plan, je repère tous les hôtels pour préparer mes itinéraires car je dois n’en rater aucun : c’est impossible de savoir à l’avance s’il y a quelque chose d’intéressant à photographier. En avril, 4 mois seulement plus tard, le quart des hôtels avait disparu, transformés en résidence ou démolis pour un nouveau projet immobilier. Le Plaza, une adresse mythique au coin de la 5ème avenue et de Central Park est un monument historique classé. Un promoteur a quand même obtenu l’autorisation de transformer en appartements les trois quarts des chambres. C’est là que je me suis rendu compte que ce que je photographiais avait une valeur historique. De toute façon un hôtelier est amené à rénover son hôtel fréquemment et à changer son enseigne. Disons que mes sujets ont une durée de vie de 20 ans. Je n’ai pas de temps à perdre, je repars tout de suite. Quelle chance!
New York April 2007: The real estate bull market had not yet fallen apart. It was in wandering the streets that I remarked this forceful, violent harmony of colors on the door of the entry. No other exterior sign or indication, not even a name. It's near Union Square on 15th St. I tried to find it again on the Internet, no luck. I wonder if this hotel still exists. In January, using the internet, I prepared my trip to New York: information on the net is up-to-date, real-time and trustworthy. I searched all the hotels on a map to prepare my itinerary for I didn't want to miss any: it's impossible to know ahead of time if there is really something interesting to photograph. In April, only four months later, a quarter of the hotels had disappeared, transformed into residences or destroyed for new real estate projects. The Plaza, of mythic address, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park is a classified historic monument. Nonetheless, a promoter had obtained the authorization to transform three quarters of the rooms into apartments. It's then that I realize that those things I was photographing had an historic value. In any case, hotel owners often modify their hotels and frequently change the signage. We can say that my subjects have a lifetime of 20 years. Thus I didn’t have time to spare and left again quickly. What a luck!
